Visitors to the Jewish cemetery of Yahilnitsya are always impressed by its imposing white fence with its black metal gates. In 2017, ESJF and Geder Avos erected those gates with the generous financial support of descendants of Reb Shmelke of Sasov (1800-1861), who was laid to rest there.
During World War II, the benevolent townsfolk of Yahilnitsya risked their lives by refusing to cooperate with the invading Nazis’ murderous persecution of the local Jews.
World Jewry will never forget that noble hour, and expresses its deepest gratitude to those good people.
