“As the Baal Shem Tov approached the holy community of Sataniv, he saw a light over one of the townspeople. He stood still and observed that it hovered over a certain woman. When he asked around, he was told, ‘That must be Di Frume Rivele (our devout Rivkah). She’s always collecting coins to feed the poor and hungry folk!’ ”
That incident, as recorded in the chassidic classic, Shivchei HaBesht (pp. 120-121), sprang to life in 2016. At that time, after years of searching, R. Israel Meir Gabay of Oholei Tzaddikim located the gravestone of Rivele, with its fascinating inscription, and that of her husband. Two of their sons, R. Yosef of Kaminka and R. Yitzchak Sofer of Mezritch, became famed disciples of the Baal Shem Tov.
This is another project of historical discovery and restoration that Geder Avos is proud to be involved in.
